If all else fails: you can moun that VHDX in a virtual machine to get to the data or mount in on a physical Windows 8/8.1/10/Windows 2012(R2) server. But I have researched and tested a lot more to find the root cause and the problem is really caused by VirtualBox. Your tips were right on the money, the system restored! When booting from a USB drive, click through all the restore prompts, and yank the USB drive you booted from just before clicking ‘Next' to restore the system image.

Restore doesn't handle a different disk/ boot order well. The backup did not complete successfully, and no log files were truncated for this database. when downloading hot fix not giving option for above operating system. i have been looking for an effective resolution for 0x80070057 during image restore and obviously did not k.i.s.s. and totally forgot hardware 101: booting from usb effects the disk layout duhhhhh.
