I may just have to do without Windows Updates - and with what has happened with the August update, that may not be a bad thing! Then I shut down, rebooted, and checked it again: sure enough, those same two updates were still there -- they hadn't been installed at all. So I am just going to stay with 8 until something better comes along...I already dual boot Win 7 and Mint on my desktop and they meet my needs just fine.
